Hi Barbara. Thanks for the comment. I would say first, that “turning away” is taken from Scripture (Romans 16:17), and so is a command to be obeyed. The reason that the verse gives, is that such teachers “cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned.” Error in the church is a divisive force. The same thought is used by Paul in Titus 1:11 that false teachers, “must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households.” The command is to remove yourself from fellowship (2 Cor. 6:17), and expose such teaching as heretical. And, while I would caution anyone not to depart from a church too hastily, particularly if the issues are secondary, we should never tolerate false teaching from the leadership of the church on fundamental issues such as the deity of Christ, the Trinity, the biblical gospel of salvation by Christ alone apart from works, the full inerrancy and authority of Scripture, etc…Were we to stay, the new or immature Christians would actually be more confused and misled. They would consider our presence in such a church, to be tacit approval of what was being preached. I hope that helps, Barbara. Thanks, again, for the comment/question.

The last paragraph here has me asking a question: How do we “turn away”, and I’m thinking here that you mean to leave a church which has lowered its standards, and then also “protect fellow believers” from being deceived, confused, and misled. If the mature/good guys all leave, the new or immature are left defenseless!
